Q. What is your tax-exempt status?

A. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. As our gross receipts are less than $5,000 annually, we are not required to have IRS approval before operating as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. However, we have nevertheless applied for a determination letter to reassure our donors about our tax-exempt status. Our application is currently pending.

Q. Are contributions tax-deductible?

A. Your contriutions may be deductible for federal income tax purposes if you are itemizing deductions on Schedule A (in lieu of taking the standard deduction) and your contributions otherwise qualify under applicable law. Contributions may also be deductible for the purposes of state taxes and/or federal estate and gift taxes. Please consult a tax professional for more details.

Q. What is your empolyee identification number?

A. Our number is: 99-1414709

Q. How wil my donation be used?

A. Without further instructions, your donation will be applied to the general fund and may be used for any purposes consistent with our exempt purposes. Among other things, your donation could be used to support our annual awards program, free chess magazine and archival projects.

Q. How do I give a restricted donation?

A. We would be happy to work with you to ensure that your donation is applied towards the specific uses you designate. Please contact the President for more details.

Q. Do you accept in-kind donations?

A. Yes, we do. If you would like to make a nonmonetary donation, please contact the President.

Q. What are benefactor memberships?

A. Benefactor memberships are our primary means of recognizing our generous supporters. As a Benefactor, you would receive the benefits of regular members (including full voting rights) and be recognized in the Hall of Honor on the website and in issues of The Chess Journalist. If you are considering contributing $40 or more, we strongly encourage you to purchase a Benefactor membership as part of your contribution. Memberships can be purchased and renewed on the join page.

Q. How can I support CJA without donating today?

A. You can support Chess Journalists of America without any immediate cash outlay by leaving it a bequest in your will or naming it as a beneficiary in a trust.
